“ (Early) Cherry Blossoms at Inokashira Park ”
(1995)
Oil Pastel, Watercolor
40 cm x 31 cm
(15.7 “ X 12”)
on Washi Paper
I remember creating this piece, ”en plein air”,
22 years ago, at Inokashira Park...
I was camped out with all my painting gear,
along the bank of the boat pond.
I remember the passerby stopping to look at what I was doing,
and it made me uneasy...
It was this time of the year- still early for cherry blossoms, just a few were open.
What was more interesting to me,
was the color in everything else other than the blossoms-
It was a challenge to me, to capture that!
I remember the passerby looking at my “work-in-progress”,
with perplexed expressions...
I now prefer to paint either indoors, or in a quiet place free of passerby-
My work reveals all, when it is finished!
This piece is in my private collection,
it caught my eye today, and I wanted to showcase it.
A few days ago I took a bike ride to a nearby onsen.
It was both relaxing and refreshing,
and a nice way to get acquainted with the surrounding seasonal changes.
