"Spring Ride Home On The Bikepath"
(1999)

53 cm x 65 cm
21" X 26"

Gouache on canvas

Magical flowers
Their color and scent remain
In my memory...

© 2026 Pamela MacCarthy

I painted this in 1999,
in a town in Western Tokyo,
where I lived (and bicycled) then.

It's been some time since then!
Forsythia's (Rengyo) mean Spring
to me since I was a little girl
in upstate New York.

Spring is here!

I'm recollecting
When I painted this beauty:
Just out the window...

I've decided to highlight this painting today.

It was once up on my old (now gone) flash website,
but I couldn't find it here.

It was created the year before this blog, in 2002,
it's in my private collection.

Today I present this ethereal
memory of my time in Japan;

"Cherry Blossoms in the Backyard Shrine"...

My mother was born this day...
'Remembering her

I created this painting many Summer's ago,
while visiting my mother in upstate NY.

It's a fond memory, visiting her there from Japan,
with my son Michio, and celebrating her birthday,
August 18th...

Today, my mother is gone, my childhood home upstate is gone,
Akio and my home and life in Japan, gone...

Loss is a bitter pill.

But today I honor and remember my mother, Shirley.

"Pamela and The Lotus Pond"

Looking at past works
I see my transformation
Chrysalis no more...

© 2024 Pamela MacCarthy

I have been painting since childhood.
I felt my history and evolution while taking this self-portrait with "Lotus Pond", from 2003.
It's traveled with me here to Florida, from Japan...

In the past, as in this painting, I mostly painted what I saw.
Learning as I go, in studio and en plein air,
and revelling in the beautious scenery of Japan!

Then I went digital,
using imagination and honing my hand to mouse skills, editing, and digital skills...

I've had many successful shows in Japan, mostly in the jazz clubs I also performed in,
and art house coffee shops and restaurants.
But never a gallery.
I've had no luck getting a gallery showing in Japan.

Consequently, many of my canvases, (including "The Lotus Pond")
have not been seen in public due to the smoking
that was prevalent in most non-gallery public spaces, then, in Japan...

What I'm doing now is abstraction, or as I describe it "intuitive" painting.

As a jazz singer, I see similarities in the artistic creative process; you must first learn fundamentals;
learn the music as it's written, before you can "improvise" with any precision.
You just know/feel when it's time to fly.

It's time to fly.

I want to do a retrospective; incorporating my art, new and old and with some of my music
into one show.
Not much to ask from the Universe, is it?

" Freesia ”
1996

Black Ink, Watercolor, Oil Pastels

Watercolor Paper

12 X 16”
31 X 40 cm

I thought of this painting, while considering Mother’s Day.

I created it in March of 1996,
using a gorgeous Boku glass vase...
I’ve always liked freesia, not only for its enchanting scent,
but the shape of the blooms, and leaves.

Today my son will visit.

Happy Mother’s Day!

“Chinese Trumpet Flowers”

1999

Gouache on Canvas
17” X 21”
45.5 cm x 53 cm

I decided to show this older painting of mine, today...

These flowers are making an appearance now,
and it reminded me of this painting.

I took new photos of it, it now looks as it should...

This painting was the last one I used black outlines on a canvas,
21 years ago!

“The Canna”

Gouache on Canvas

21” X 26”
53 cm x 66 cm

I present my finished canvas, at last!
I've worked on this most of the summer,
I'm very happy with the result.

These flowers were growing in the water next to the ricefield,
I wanted to catch the verdant fluidity and rich colors...

I performed my last time at the Ritz-Carlton, last night.
Keisaku & I were in top form.

Now, I am celebrating my harvest!

I wish my youngest sister Bonnie
a very Happy Birthday,
the 30th September, Libra girl...

“Michio Is 20”

50.5 cm x 60.5 cm

Gouache on canvas

At last, I present my finished portrait of my son, Michio.

Painting Michio's portrait is something I've felt a very strong urge to do
for a while now.
Him turning 20 seemed an auspicious time to finally take this challenge on...

I'm very proud of this, and my son.

It's the shoubu season now in Japan.
Also called ayame, or irises, in English.
Every year, after the rice fields are flooded, these flowers are soon to follow.

This is a painting I did a few years ago of these flowers...
