Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Today is the first day of Spring,
a holiday, here in Japan.

But more importantly for me,
it is my son Michio's 21st birthday!

It feels bittersweet, somehow...

From the minute he came into my life,
it has made all the difference.

I never thought I'd ever be a mom.

I didn't think motherhood was for me,
or that I'd be any good at it.

But for the past 21 + years,
it has been the most fulfilling job
I've ever chosen to do.

I thank God for the opportunity.

I say job, because I believe that's what it is.

Raising a child is the most important job there is.

I am happy and thankful that my son has grown
into a warm and caring individual,
who will make a difference in the world.

I'd proud to be part of that, as his mother.

Happy Birthday, Michio!

Friday, March 16, 2007

I knew it was too good to be true.

Aside from the annual onslaught of the cedar-pollen allergy suffering
that engulfs a great deal of the Tokyo population,
my son Michio included,
the early warm weather has brought a feeling of lightness
and eagerness for the Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) season to arrive.

But the cold weather is back.

Japan's NHK broadcast network made a formal apology
on the evening TV news,
for predicting the cherry blossoms would arrive earlier
than what is now expected.

I'd like to offer my own prediction:

I predict they'll come,
when they come,
and that's when they'll come,
and not a moment sooner...

You heard it here first.

I've entered the Annual Art Print 2007,
at Lessedra Gallery,
in Sophia, Bulgaria, once again.

Last year was my first year to participate.
I was one of 525 international artists.
The catalogue is excellent!

I've entered three of my most recent digital art works this year:

"FLU, or CABIN FEVER?" (2006)

"SOLO" (2006)

"Marigold" (2006)

To see my complete collection of digital work,
go here.

My second prediction:

St. Patrick's Day! will be very soon!

The Plum Blossoms

45 X 37.5 cm oil pastel,
Aquarelle watercolor pencils, India ink, gouache

In February, I created this painting on commission.

I decided to re-explore a a technique using a medium combination I used 10 or more years ago.

Painting mostly in gouache, I've missed the "drawing" aspect of the oil pastels...

Here is a painting done 12 years ago...

The Snowball Tree

37 cm x 26 cm
oil pastel & watercolor

Funny, a poem popped in my head, just recently.

The subject was of the time when I created "The Snowball Tree."

I wrote it down, right away,
or it would be lost in the great expanse
of netherland,
where single socks
and perpetual busy signals reside...

I sat on my mothers lawn,
sketching "The Snowball Tree"
I didn't know she was standing by the clothesline,
near to me...
Mozart was playing on my headphones,
in the sky a storm was starting to form-
My mother stood at a distance
watching her firstborn...

My new "look"

The Japan International Orchid Grand Prix
was a hit, as always.
This year for different reasons.

I wasn't particularly gone on the displays-
Too much schlock,
and not enough flower diversity.

Using Greek Mythology
as the design theme
does invite over enthusiastic embellishments...

I'm thinking of John Belushi on SNL:
"Hamburger, Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger, Pepsi, Pepsi..."

There were Doric columns and Greek gods & goddesses names splattered everywhere.

Luckily, flowers in general,
and Orchids in particular,
know nothing of trendy catch phrases and "themes."

The individual plants, grown by individuals;
not schools of, or corporations of, anything,
sorted by orchid families, with their titles,
and ribbons,
were the big hit, for me...

They never cease to amaze me, each in their beauty and uniqueness.

Aside from the cheese factor of each row named after a Greek Goddess,
it was my favorite part of the show.

Attention K-Mart shoppers, we have a special on
Handy Wipes on the Athena aisle...

This world is becoming far too obsessed with whistles and bells,
when the simplicity and elegance of nature's design
doesn't need it.

Here are some of my favorites,
taken on my mobile phone camera:

As a closer, each year,
I usually purchase an orchid brooch,
as a souvenir of the year's show.

This year the pins were uniformly ugly.

They must've been updated as well.

On my walk towards the exit,
a very attractive man named Kevin
from the Taiwan Orchids display,
showed me a new perspective.

Why bring home a pin, when I could become an actual orchid grower?

Yes, I am the proud care-taker of a Catasetum Tenebrosum "St Francis" plant.

It is just a little thing now, but when it blooms, the flowers will look like this:

Catasetum Tenebrosum

More news,
I created a new painting, by commission,
titled The Plum Blossoms.

I will post it here soon...

I'm rehearsing and getting my new music prepared for my show at B-flat,Akasaka, in one month's time...

March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb...

Till next time...
