Starting around the end of May, the rice fields are flooded. Soon after, the irises, called shoubu, or ayame, here in Japan, start to bloom...
This is my painting from 1999 of them.

Recently, I took this photo, taken when the sun was about to set, the rice seedlings have been planted. These are shoubu irises, this one a wine color.
