It’s that time of year, once again...
Starting around the end of May, the rice fields are flooded. Soon after, the irises, called shoubu, or ayame here in Japan, start to bloom...
Just yesterday, I said hello to the first bloom of these beautiful purple irises.
This painting of mine from 1999 is of them.

Recently, I took this photo, taken when the sun was about to set, the rice seedlings have been planted. These are shoubu irises, this one a wine color.
