On Thursday, my dear friend, & drummer extraordinaire Jimmie Smith took me to his gig at the annual New Orleans Dixieland Jazz Festival in Asakusa, Tokyo.
There were 2 bands featured.
From Japan were Yoshio Toyama's Dixie Saints; and from NOLA; Thomas Fischer & The New Orleans Jazz All Stars.
Jimmie played with The Dixie Saints :
Yoshio Toyama - trumpet Keiko Toyama - piano, banjo Koji Suzuki - clarinet Tadanori Konakawa - trombone Yoichi (Baseball) Fujisaki - bass Jimmie Smith - drums
I sat backstage and got this shot:

I so enjoy Jimmie's artistry... He plays on my first CD, "How About You"?
I wandered over to the dressing room next door to meet the second band.
From New Orleans, La., The New Orleans Jazz All Stars are :
Thomas Fischer - leader, clarinet, sax Thomas Hook - piano, vocals Neil Unterseher - banjo, vocals Charles Fardella - trumpet Frederick Lonzo - trombone Richard Moten - bass Gerald French - drums
Yolanda Windsay - vocals
It was a pleasure to meet and spend some time with the musicians from N'Awlins.
The warmth and camaraderie I felt was something I won't soon forget.
Their performances were magical.
Then, out came the lovely Yolanda Windsay.
She has a golden voice, that just soars with spirit!
I really must visit New Orleans very soon!
The spirit of Dixieland Jazz was spread over that hall like butter on bread.
I was glad to be there!
