Last Wednesday's Ikebana:

Ikebana # 83

Lorna and her blog
have a fresh new look...

On Thursday,
my dear friend, & drummer extraordinaire
Jimmie Smith
took me to his gig at the annual
New Orleans Dixieland Jazz Festival
in Asakusa, Tokyo.

There were 2 bands featured.

From Japan were
Yoshio Toyama's Dixie Saints;
and from NOLA;
Thomas Fischer & The New Orleans Jazz All Stars.

Jimmie played with
The Dixie Saints :

Yoshio Toyama - trumpet
Keiko Toyama - piano, banjo
Koji Suzuki - clarinet
Tadanori Konakawa - trombone
Yoichi (Baseball) Fujisaki - bass
Jimmie Smith - drums

I sat backstage
and got this shot:

I so enjoy Jimmie's artistry...
He plays on my first CD,
"How About You"?

I wandered over to the dressing room next door
to meet the second band.

From New Orleans, La.,
The New Orleans Jazz All Stars
are :

Thomas Fischer - leader, clarinet, sax
Thomas Hook - piano, vocals
Neil Unterseher - banjo, vocals
Charles Fardella - trumpet
Frederick Lonzo - trombone
Richard Moten - bass
Gerald French - drums

Yolanda Windsay - vocals

It was a pleasure to meet and spend some time
with the musicians from N'Awlins.

The warmth and camaraderie I felt
was something I won't soon forget.

Their performances were magical.

Then, out came the lovely
Yolanda Windsay.

She has a golden voice, that just soars with spirit!

I really must visit New Orleans very soon!

The spirit of Dixieland Jazz
was spread over that hall
like butter on bread.

I was glad to be there!

This is one from my recent
August Etegami session,
I saved for this occasion.

I sent this card to Michael
right after I finished it,
so it would get there in time
for his 50th birthday celebration.

He is currently celebrating with old friends at his hometown in the Bay-area of Ca.

Totally Tubuloso, dude!

Big thanks to the our sensei; Hamada-san,

And to my fellow painters,
the homemade dishes for lunch afterwards,
were awesome :

Dim Sum dumplings, Spaghetti with meatsauce,
Deep fried fish, Sweet and sour vegetable salad, Red beans and rice.
The giant peach I painted, was served up...

Shindo-san brought a large round watermelon
from her friends' garden in Yamanashi-

Yesterday's Ikebana:

Ikebana # 81
8-11-2010

The night before, August 10,
was the annual fireworks
on the Tama river.

My son Michio & I,
have made it a family tradition
to make that annual trek down to the riverbank,
at 6am,
to put our tarp down and reserve our spot.

This year,
Lorna, Hiroshi, and Kristy joined us.

Lorna brought some delicious
home-made dishes and cocktails.

Hiroshi brought his red, red wine.

Kristy brought chocolate-filled koala cookies.

I brought plum-flavored potato chips, cheese & crackers, watermelon,
and this :

Kirin alcohol-free beer

There was a delicious night breeze
that cooled and calmed us...

And of course...

My dear friend Michael
invited me to join him & his friend Akemi,
to go to the beach!

This past Sunday,
I was out early to meet Michael
to catch the long train ride out together,
to Chiba.

In Chiba, we met Akemi,
who was waiting with her car.
She took us for fabulous morning coffee
at Peace Coffee.

Michael picked up this CD for the ride:

Journey
Greatest Hits

I got a frozen Aquarius,
to cool my neck, and drink later...

And, we're off!

Through the ricefields of Chiba,
it was so hot-
But the scenery was breathtaking,
like an oil painting...

Michael, being the motor enthusiast he is,
took us for a quick pitstop;
a motor-track, on the way.

They hold races with go-carts, mini bikes, etc.

The sun was blazing,
and I was soon feeling woozy...
Cold drinks for the house, and we're off,
to our destination:
Isumi; Ohara Beach!

Soon...

We're there!

It's a fabulous beach.
The toilets, showers, & changing rooms are nearby.
We got our bathing suits on, and...

The beach!

The waves weren't too knarly,
but big enough to body surf.

A DJ kept the jams bumpin' ...

The heat was soon forgotten,
in the sea breeze.
The seawater was so refreshing...

Akemi brought a birthday cake for Michael
and we had cake on the beach.

We stayed until sunset...

Michael flew for a visit back home,
to the Bay Area, yesterday.

This pre-birthday beach party was a most excellent send off!

Special thanks to Michael & Akemi
for their warm hospitality.

I had a spectacular time!

Another scorcher,
yesterday.

At around dusk, I love the light.

Images are softened by a glowing amber
that spells relief
from the contrasting harshness of midday...

After Ikebana, yesterday,
Lorna & I went to see this:

Inception ( 2010 )

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt,
Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy,
Tom Berrenger & Michael Caine

Dir: Chris Nolan
Music: Hans Zimmer

I loved it!

The music was intense...

The "return from a dream" sequence
reminded me somewhat of the feeling I got
watching "The Wizard of Oz" for the first time,
as a youngster...
