The rain returns.

The day before yesterday,
it was like Summer,
smokin' hot outside.

At sunset, it was magical...

Summer Solstice!

Yesterday my friend Hiroshi and I
took advantage of the warm, sunny weather,
a break from the rainy season...

First, for my favorite Thai lunch,
and then on to Fuchu Art Museum.

Showing was "Pure Forms: The Era of Dieter Rams - Reconsideration of Functionalist Design" Exhibition.

I found the whole show refreshing,
with the ultra cool & sleek designs,
both modern and retro.

Here is a fab account of the show,
by Gee, at OVER THERE blog.

We then got the bus back in time to see :

The Reader.

A most excellent film.

I especially enjoyed the church scene,
which featuried a choral piece from
Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina; "Pueri Hebraeorum".

Performed by Philharmonischer Kinderchor Dresden.

After, one of these:

Dusk arrived...

Time to call it-

A lovely day!

I wonder why Santana
never won a Grammy for Black Magic Woman?!

Abraxas had to be one of the best albums, ever!
39 years ago, it came out.
It was one of the first LP's I ever owned!

It's even more potent today...

And, the cover art :

A Very Happy Birthday to my Step-Dad, Al!

Ikebana#52
6-08-2009

I used this ethereal looking stuff called smoke trees,
in this week's arrangement.

It compliments the rainy season with its misty appearance...

Recently,
I attended the Sogetsu Ikebana Exhibition
at Shinjuku's Takashimaya Department Store.

The theme was red and black.

Some of the works went beyond
the usage of flowers and stalks
in ceramic pottery.

Broccoli, watermelon, and constructed backdrops
served to push the boundaries
of the conventional...

I so need a digital camera!
Such stark lighting limits cell phone camera options!

Here are a few shots:

The month of June in Japan means wet.

The rainy season is soon upon us,
bringing with it ajisai (hydrangea),
and also with the flooding of the rice paddies
comes the Japanese iris, or ayame, or shoubu.

This is my painting of them from 1999:
