I was supposed to visit a rose garden today.
Except it's raining now,
so that's out like trout in a drought.

So, to vent my displeasure with the situation,
I've created this:

The Rainy Day Rose

I believe God created baseball
so men would have an alternative to killing each other,
and rose gardens
for a glimpse of perfection on Earth!

Happy Birthday, Archie Shepp!

The gig at Yokohama's
Inter-Continental Hotel
was cool.

I played with 2 musicians I haven't seen
for a very long time.

Takashi Miyazawa on piano.
From JAM music school in Yokohama,
he likes to play them blues!

Nobu Yamashita on drums.
He's still nailin' down some stomp!

The bass guy was new to me...
He played a nice swinging bass,
and completed a solid rhythm section...

The line up:

Pamela MacCarthy - vocals

Takashi Miyazawa - piano
Kazuyo Yamaguchi - bass
Nobuhiko Yamashita - drums

I finished the gig
and made like a bread truck and hauled buns
from Sakuragicho station
to points homeward.

I tried to make it an early night,
as the next morning at 8:15am
the bus leaves bound for Funabashi, Chiba
and the Asari-Clam Farm.

My girlfriend Lorna and I
met up on the bus...

After an hour and a half cruising on the highway...

Clam digging was a lot easier in my mind,
I have to say.
But we had a lot of laughs, figuring it out.
Lorna & I, and a young man joined us.

Later, Kanno-san,
who had already bagged his 1 kg. quota,
helped me find the spot that yielded the most clams...

The Booty!

After, we found a lovely, cool spot, under the pines,
away from the bright, sunny beach.
A cement barrier worked well for off-the-ground seating.

After squatting and digging,
my knees needed a break!

Lorna prepared a delicious lunch,
with ice cold water, and later, cake!

A relaxed bus ride back,
and I hiked my tired self home.

I washed the clams in salt water,
and put them in the freezer.

I will make a pot of Mamma Mela's Red Clam Sauce
with linguine...

As Memorial Day approaches,
I want to pay my respects
to the troops,
here, away, and departed...

Ikebana # 50

This is my fiftieth Ikebana creation...

A very busy week, coming up, for me!

Wednesday I will meet with my girlfriends
for Thai lunch,
to follow with the afternoon showing of the new movie
Angels and Demons.

Friday evening I will bring
my own special brand of jazz vocal excellence
to a private Black Tie party
held at the Inter-Continental Hotel,
on the bay in Yokohama.

I am wearing a long black silk beaded dress,
with these lovelies from Cinderella Shoes:

Honour Black
from Cinderella Shoes

This is a fabulous site for larger-sized ladies shoes.

With locations in Ireland & the UK,
all shoes feature a wider "C" width,
rather than the standard "B",
which doesn't work for me.

They are very reliable,
and I believe their prices are reasonable.

I've ordered boots, ankle boots, & flats as well
from them, so far...

Two thumbs up!

Early the next morning, Saturday,
I will take a bus out to the beach at Chiba,
to go clam digging, with a small group from my city.

It will be my first time to try this here !

These asari clams are delicious
in miso broth with sansho (kinome) leaves.

Japanese Prickly Ash,
or Sansho
in my balcony herb garden.

The leaves have a distinct aroma;
citrus-y, mint-y...

There will also be some Italian-style
red-clam sauce with linguine action
going down in Mamma Mela's kitchen!

I hope to get some photos to share from some of these events!

My son, Michio will return to University this Friday.

Happy Belated Birthday to my niece Jennifer's little girl, Natalie,
who turned 2!

that does all kinds of fun stuff with your photos...

My AMOUR 2009 iPod update:

It's Like Reaching For the Moon - Billie Holiday
Fool to Cry - The Rolling Stones
Isn't Life Strange - The Moody Blues
Peaceful Easy Feeling - The Eagles
Comes Love - Billie Holiday
Star Fucker - The Rolling Stones
Let's Spend the Night Together - The Rolling Stones
Right Round - Flo Rida
Monkey Man - The Rolling Stones
Throw It Away - Abbey Lincoln / Archie Shepp
Aja - Steely Dan
That's Life I Guess - Billie Holiday
I'll Be Holding On (Black Rain) - Gregg Allman/Hans Zimmer
When You Taught Me How to Dance (Miss Potter) - Katie Melua

I think about the life I live
A figure made of clay
And think about the things I lost
The things I gave away

And when I'm in a certain mood
I search the house and look
One night I found these magic words
In a magic book

Throw it away
Throw it away
Give your love, live your life
Each and every day

And keep your hand wide open
Let the sun shine through
'Cause you can never lose a thing
If it belongs to you...

Throw it Away

-Abbey Lincoln

This is an amazing piece of music and lyrics,
featuring two of my favorite artists;
Archie Shepp, and Abbey Lincoln.

I had the grand fortune to meet and sit in with the wonderful Archie Shepp
a couple times here in Tokyo...

I'll never forget it.

Ms. Lincoln, I met before I came to Tokyo,
in her dressing room, at a NYC Live Jazz establishment.

It was late 1990,
and I was talking with her about my professional concerns
of moving to Tokyo.

She was very kind and gave me this advice:

If singing is what you do,
keep on doing it, where ever it takes you!

Ikebana #49

This is my latest ikebana creation.

It is good to connect once a week,
with my fellow flower lovers,
to create Ikebana arrangements.

Lorna and I are the flower fetchers.

We go to a special shop that caters to Ikebana customers.

With our choice of one flower, color, or even texture,
the shop staff compliments it in an Ikebana sensibility,
adding greens, stalks, branches, or whatever they deem
a proper balance.

It is always interesting to open
the white wrapped paper bunches,
and see how our original choice has been complimented...

I usually bring jazz CD's to inspire creativity,
as opposed to silence.
It makes a relaxing atmosphere.
The other girls bring foods and tea to contribute to lunch,

Wiwied is the instructor.
She teaches newcomers the basics,
as well as giving pointers...

We are an international group.
Lanquage isn't set, although Japanese, as the host country, is first.

English, Chinese, Tagalog, Indonesian, Malaysian, Korean, Thai, Russian, etc., are also spoken...

Ikebana and music don't require a lot of translation...

I find it a great way to just be...

Till Next time...

Happy Mother's Day!

This is a special digital collage I created
for my mother, Shirley.

And to all mothers who work diligently;
without much ballyhoo,
to be a source of guidance, inspiration, love, and support for their children...

God Bless You!

Happy Children's Day!

Kodomo no Hi

Today is the height of Golden Week here in Japan.

In better economic times, people would fly off to their hometowns,
or abroad, at this time.
This year, it seems more people are staying put,
and enjoying more local festivities...

Tonight, I will check out the festivities at Okunitama Jinja.

My girlfriend from Australia; Kristy, will join me.

I also want to wish my girlfriend Lorna,
a very Happy Birthday!

2 days ago, I was the guest of Lorna and her husband, Arai-san
for a deep sea fishing-boat outing.

I took photos on my old-school camera, which requires film developing...
When ready, I will post pics I managed to get in between heaves...

A great day, with some lovely fish and squid to take home!

A learning experience, my favorite kind of outing!

Speaking of outings, my son, Michio, is on one himself.

He is a bonafide Nintendo man,
and he is presently competing at a
Wii Smash Brothers Brawl Tournament.

Kick butt, Mi-cheato!
