Ruth Brown
The Queen Mother of The Blues
January 30, 1928 - November 17, 2006

The Queen Mother of The Blues,
Ruth Brown, has passed on,
she was 78.

I’m not a journalist,
I don't want to go into the great details
of her spectacular life and career-
That job has already been done.

I just want to say what her music has meant to me,
as a person, and as a fellow performer.

She was one of a kind.

From her girlish sort of rant at the endings of some songs,
She made the song uniquely her own.

I didn’t start to know about her till
the second half of her career.
I never had the pleasure of meeting her,
or seeing her perform live,
but I am very familiar with her music.

Give a listen to some of the links here.
Two of my favorite CD’s of hers are:

R+B = Ruth Brown.
Give a listen to ”That Train Don’t Stop Here”
with that kickin’ band she's playing with!

And, on this CD, Blues on Broadway,
check out, “If I Can’t Sell It”, "Nobody Knows You (When You’re Down and Out”,
and “Am I Blue?”

This CD is recorded on a live 2 track format,
but combined with the fabulous line-up of musicians
and Ruth's own addition
of grit and class,
it is rich with human experience!

You don't sing them kind of blues in your 20's, people!

Then, came Ruth's Tony Award winning
appearance in Black and Blue.
I was very happy to see her get much musical acclaim for her role in that musical!

Later, she went on to record and tour with Bonnie Raitt
on the Road Tested CD and tour...

I also have that double CD,
it is a treasure!

Ruth Brown's music is like my old friend-
I've come to depend on it,
when I'm feelin' low...

Nooooobody like her.

Luckily, her recordings live on...

Lucky Ruth, Tell the truth!

Rest in Peace, Ruth Brown...

Michael took me to see the Rousseau
show at The Setagaya Art Museum.
It is titled, Henri Rousseau Envisaged...

The outing was a great diversion from the invading hum drum,
and had it not been for the rude zimmer-frame set
pushing and stepping on my toes,
it would have been perfect.

Outside, the sun fades earlier, now...

At 3pm,
the warm golden amber hues cling to the tops of trees,
and vibrate off passerby.

The crows offer commentary
as Michael and I walk back to the station.

I smell Winter in the twilight air...

Eensie Weensie

Halloween night was a total gas!

Witch-y me

Arrrrrr... Bring on the dancin' leather bustier clad wenchesl
Sez Michael and his magic hook...

Me & Jimmie Smith doin' the Who Do Da Voodoo?

For my next trick...

A great time was had by all.
We sat at an outside cafe in Roppongi Hills
sippin' Champagne and Perrier,
havin' a few laughs...

A perfectly cool and breezy Halloween night in Roppongi...

Meanwhile, in the breezy town of Los Angeles, California,
Some mighty impressive pumpkin carving went on...

Wicked WITCH!
