My gig last night at Jazz Spot "J" went well.
Together with Keisaku Takahashi- piano,
Mark Tourian- bass, and Yosuke Hase on drums,
we put on a good show.

I presented Hiroshi his painting.

There was a photographer in the audience,
who took some excellent shots of our performance,
I will post a bit later.

Other news is, I will have a computer art show at Jazz Spot "J"
showing the month of October.
I will post more details about that later...

Happy Birthday

What a difference a day makes...

Yesterday, there were the dark clouds of thunder, lightning,
and rain, with an earthquake thrown in for whimsy.

I was riding on the Tobu-Tojo line to Ikebukuro,
around noon,
when my express train slows to a stop.

I had headphones on, diggin’ on the jams,
and I thought,
What the hell are we stopping for?
Then, I felt (and saw) the rocking of the train.

The people onboard were pretty ho-hum
about the whole schmeer.

I just pretended I was land surfing...

Just a few minutes pause,
and then it’s back to the frenetic tempo of Tokyo.

Today, the sun shines bright and the sky is deep clear blue...

Vacation countdown:
5 days till blast off...

I've finally finished the new Harry Potter book,
The Half-Blood Prince.

What a bummer.

The last book before it,
The Order of the Phoenix was a bummer, too.

I was enthralled each and every minute of reading them, though...
I guess you don't have to like where the story goes,
just the story being told.

J.K. Rowling has a fantastic penchant for storytelling.

I'm curious to know how the latter 2 books
will translate to movie form.
I anxiously await the film
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire...

My painting is done!
I will photograph it today.
I hope to post my new work
very soon.

My son Michio did famously on his summer session classes.
As well as scoring a 3.87 grade average, (out of 4.0)
his TOEFL score is 543.
You need 525 to start as an undergraduate student.
Michio will start in September!

My gig at Jazz Spot "J" is coming up
this Friday, the 19th.

And then, one week from today...

One week of vacation, at last!

Till next time... 'Mela

Since we came to this little town near the river,
the one major perk
of enduring the summer heat & humidity
is the August fireworks...

My son Michio and I were out bright and early
yesterday morning with our tarp,
to reserve a spot along the bank of the Tamagawa river,
in our neighborhood.
We got the inside dope on where they would be launching the fireworks
from this year,
and we placed our tarp right in front of that spot.

Last year, the event was cancelled.
The year before, it rained.

This year all conditions were go, dude.

Michio brought a pillow so he could lay back and look at the sky.
I sat barefoot, sipping a cold one.

The sparkling lights from buildings across the river
resembled multi-colored gems...
The passing KEIO trains looked like
diamond tennis bracelets against the night sky.

A slight breeze, and the sky was a welcoming canvas for
1 solid hour of some of the most glorious pyrotechnics!

They had a few new firework designs,
this year-
One was a heart, then a face blowing a kiss,
then, what appeared to be a solitaire shaped engagement ring...
Subtle hints...

The sequencing and design were top-notch.
Awesome, dude!

Afterwards, people walked or rode their bicycles home.
Many were wearing summer yukata.

There were not many cars around.
The highway along the river was temporarily shut,
to allow people to walk.

My friend Liz had a small après fireworks party at her house.
On the way there, I stopped at the 7-11
to get more Point One's.
The owner of the shop was decked out in his summer regalia;
geta,towel headband, and yukata,
selling drinks from a large cooler outside in the parking lot.

It was a night last night.

And now, it's morning, and the cicadas say:

yes yes yes yes yes yes yeeeeeeeeeeeesssss.

Time to get back to work.

My painting awaits,
and the light is good...

Till next time... 'Mela

“ Chinese Trumpet Flowers ”

45.5 cm x 53 cm gouache on canvas

This is a painting I did a few years back in August.

There is a bit of contrast to my older paintings to the newer ones-
I don't use black outlines for contrast anymore.
I've discarded them, and the idea of them like training wheels on a bicycle-
I simply don't need them anymore .

The flowers in this painting, Nozen Kazura in Japanese
are everywhere I look, now...
They grow on a sort of vine,
that wraps and drapes on tall shrubbery / trees.
The flowers drop onto the ground
and replenish often during their bloom into

I've been pretty busy, working on my new painting.
I work about 4 hours a day-
As long as the premium light holds out...

I'm using the late afternoon light to read
Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince.
Add daily shopping and basic household chores,
and I've got a full day.

I'm making progress-
My deadline's the 19th.

I've been listening to my Dog Days collection of tunes
(I mentioned a couple of days ago)
while I paint, and that Shivaree singer,
Ambrosia Parsley,
does have a bewitching voice.

Doncha just love her name?

There’s a nail in the door
And there’s glass on the lawn
Tacks on the floor
And the tv is on
And I always sleep with my guns
When you’re gone

There’s a blade by the bed
And a phone in my hand
A dog on the floor
And some cash on the nightstand
When I’m all alone the dreaming stops
And I just can’t stand

What should I do I’m just a little baby
What if the lights go out and maybe
And then the wind just starts to moan
Outside the door he followed me home

Well goodnight moon
I want the sun
If it’s not here soon
I might be done
No it won’t be too soon ’til I say
Goodnight moon

Goodnight Moon
