At last, I’m going to get my mitts on this book:

Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince

A friend of mine, and a great trumpet player,
Neil Stalnaker has got a new blog
called Tokyo Nights.

Drop by and check it out!

Goodbye, July!

The typhoon's blown over,
and now it is smoldering hot.
This is the hot Stevie Wonder
was talking about when he named the album
Hotter than July.

The public pools are open, and I may go check one out.

In the not too distant past,
this time of the year I would be in upstate New York,
visiting my mother and family, poolside.
But now the house is gone, and all that's left
are the memories of those summers...

This is one of those memories:

Summer Lillies

I look forward to new summer memories, and vacationing
in Guam once more...

Everyone’s feeling pretty
It’s hotter than July
Though the world’s full of problems
They couldn’t touch us even if they tried

From the park I hear rhythms
Marley’s hot on the box
Tonight there will be a party
On the corner at the end of the block

Didn’t know you
Would be jammin’ until the break of dawn
I bet nobody ever told you that you
Would be jammin’ until the break of dawn
You would be jammin’ and jammin’ and jammin’, jam on

Master Blaster

-Stevie Wonder

Keep Cool!

The name Thalassa comes from Greek Mythology.

And with that, I'll have one of these:

10 parts strong-brewed lemon-verbana tea, chilled (5oz.)
4 parts white grape juice (2oz.)
2 parts fresh-squeezed lime juice (1 oz.)
lemon twist, for garnish

Combine tea and juices with cracked ice in a cocktail
shaker and shake well.
Strain over ice cubes into a chilled highball glass
and garnish with the lemon twist.
Serves one.

This recipe comes from Sally Ann Berk's
The California Health Bar Drink Guide,

A book of non alcoholic cocktails...

My friend Hiroshi took me to the Tokyo International Forum yesterday to see the works of poet & calligrapher Mitsuo Aida.

The Here and Now by Mitsuo Aida

The Here and Now

Mitsuo Aida

Hiroshi had already given me one of this artists’ books;
“A Phrase By My Side”.

I was truly inspired by his beautiful collection of observations
expressed through stunning calligraphy and Zen poetry.
All the pieces are wonderfully translated into English by
Tim Jenson, who, amongst other things, is a jazz musician...

To see Mitsuo Aida’s work, and experience this museum
in person is an unexpected pleasure.
I came away feeling bolstered, somehow...

I won’t blather on.

I’ll just say this:

Everyone should experience his work at least once.

Thanks to Hiroshi...

A great time at the bar-be-que party...

A hot, humid day in Tokyo, Sunday-
Yet the breeze and beautiful pinetree laden picnic area of the Australian Embassy made for a great summer party.
I plucked a gardenia from one of the welcoming shrubs at the entrance.

I met some pretty cool people from the Land of Oz,
and from other lands as well...

Some excellent food & bar-be-que was served:
It was my first time to sample kangaroo on the grill-
Another first, sampling Australian barramundi, a very subtle flavored fish.
Also bar-be-qued Aussie beef, and a lovely assortment of summer salads.

Saved for last was another first for me- the absolutely marvelous pavlova,
a sweet and delicious Australian dessert.

And the outdoor pool didn't suck, either!

Special thanks to our hosts Jane & Marco for an excellent time!

My peinture "catalogue" is now on my main website.

These pieces are going back a few years, and many are sold-
But I wanted to have them up for viewing...

Here's my new list of songs for summer introspection:

Break on through- The Doors
Long Haired Country Boy- The Charlie Daniels Band
Tequila Sunrise- The Eagles
Indian Summer- The Doors
Changes- David Bowie
She Drives Me Crazy- Fine Young Cannibals
The Flower of Carnage(Shura Yuki Hime)- Meiko Kaji
Green Hornet Theme- Al Hirt
Ghost Song- The Doors
How Can You Mend (A Broken Heart)- Al Green
Riders on the Storm- The Doors
Smoke Smoke Smoke That Cigarette- Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen
Angel Band- The Stanley Brothers
Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)- Nancy Sinatra
Lay Down Sally- Eric Clapton
The Crystal Ship- The Doors

A vast radiant beach in a cool jeweled moon-
Couples naked, race down by its quiet side
and we laugh like soft, mad children,
smug in the wooly cotton brains of infancy...

The music and voices are all around us.

The Ghost Song

- Jim Morrison & The Doors

I saw the films Kill Bill vol 1, & vol. 2, last night.

I didn't think I would like them.
It was fortunate that my first viewing of these films was consecutively-
After the first film,
who the hell wants to wait a year or more for vol. 2?

I thought I would hate the violence in these films-
Although the gore was realistic in appearance,
it never allowed me to absorb horror.
Like a top-notch video game, a lot of fun, but not real.

What was truly odd to me is how damn fast the time went!
What felt like 30 minutes, was an hour and a half!
The screenplay, characters, animation, scenery, music, and costumes, all-

I especially liked Bill's speech at the end, to The Bride:

"Superman is the only superhero who doesn't wear a costume to be himself,
he wears a costume to hide himself"...

I'm off to a "barby" party at the Australian Embassy.
