I'm celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday
on Saturday here in Nihon...
'Can't do feasts on a schoolday...

Here's a little something my sister Debbie sent me:

THANKSGIVING GREETINGS

'Twas the night of Thanksgiving, but I couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned-the dark meat and white.
I fought the temptation with all my might.

Tossing and turning with anticipation,
The thought of a snack became infatuation.
So I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door
And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.

I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling up so plump and so round,
'till all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.

I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky,
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.
But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees:

"Happy eating to all- Pass the cranberries, please."

May your stuffing be tasty, may your turkey be plump.
May your potatoes 'n gravy have nary a lump.
May your yams be delicious, may your pies take the prize.
May your thanksgiving dinner stay off your thighs.

When I was a kid, I listened to every kind of music.
The radio was always on, in my house-
I loved it all...

As I got older, I tended to dislike Country music.
I can’t say why, it just didn’t suit me.
It isn’t my favorite today,
but some of my disdain has fallen away:

There are some country songs that are just plain good songs.

When I listen to them now,
while being mobile,
it gives me a feeling of solidarity to listen to it...

Jazz & Blues is my thing,I feel great, when I perform it-

But listening to Country music while being here in Japan,
and out of context, it has a surreal quality-

Sometimes that’s enough to brighten my day...

Here’s a list of some of my fav’s:

Coal Miner’s Daughter- Loretta Lynn
Crazy - Patsy Cline
You Ain’t Woman Enough - Loretta Lynn
Sweet Dreams - Patsy Cline
Brother Jukebox - Mark Chesnutt
Goodtime Charlie’s Got The Blues - Charlie Rich
Wildflowers - Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris
Highway Call - Dicky Betts
Sweet Home Alabama - Lynard Skynard
Chances Are - Bob Seger, Martina McBride
Stand By Your Man - Tammy Wynette
He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones
Wichita Lineman - Glen Campbell
I Never Promised You A Rose Garden - Lynn Anderson
Help Me Make It (Through The Night) - Sammi Smith
Aimee - Pure Prairie League
Whiskey River - Wille Nelson

I uprooted myself from my home ground and left
Took my dreams and I took to the road
When a flower grows wild, it can always survive
Wildflowers don't care where they grow

These muted shades of Autumn so suit me.
Wine red, burnished gold and copper, rusty orange-
Some of my perennial favorites now sit in
a vase near my keyboard,
their fragrance keeps me spellbound as I type:
Eucalyptus, marigolds, chrysanthemums of every shape and
color...

This is the month for chrysanthemums.

The earth has such a richness about it at this time,
even as all that were planted were harvested-
There seems to be a welling up of it’s life force-
The fertility that will sleep over the winter and re-awake in the spring...

I don’t have any live dates this month-
As fate would have it,
it’s time for something else.

December will bring it's festivities with Christmas shows, and parties.
It is time now for a waltz...
I believe that days have a rhythm-
A tempo.
To follow this tempo is as natural as watching the dropping leaves
as they float to the ground.

The days are so short now.

It reminds me of my childhood in upstate New York.
Afternoons, sledding down icy snow covered hills
were cut short by the fact
that it grew dark early...

It is said that November is a spiritual month-
A time of phoenix-like renewal.

So it is, so let it be...

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life

You were only waiting for this moment to be free.
Blackbird fly
Blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.

I'm glad I have this work to present today,
creating it helped with the sting of recent events:

I was offered a gig singing the National Anthem
at Tokyo Dome this Friday,
for the post season opening game
between Japan and the USA.
Imagine my excitement.

Then, it was all taken away-
Poof.

I wonder if acupuncture could be used for a little mind bending...

Leaning in your corner
like a candidate for wax
Sidewalk social scientist don't get no satisfaction
from your cigarette
It's ten to ten and time is running out
Lock up all your memories
Get outta here, you know that we can run
Today can last another million years
Today could be the end of me
It's 11:59,
and I want to stay alive...
