I have returned to Tokyo after a week in paradise.
I had the most excellent time in the American territory
in Micronesia called Guam.
I will be posting pics very soon.
Now, in my neighborhood, the sunflowers are in bloom.
I will elaborate further on my trip,
but now I've got a case of the oh fuckits
and major sunburn...
More ice, please...

I took a bike ride today...
While peddling to the gym today,
I brought for aural inspiration a double CD of the best jazz singer ever,
and my personal favorite
Billie Holiday.
It was 45 years ago today she left this world.
She was 44.
I have been mezmerized by her voice since I first heard her, when I was 19.
Her voice and music brought a sense of belonging to me.
Listening to her in my solitude
made me feel at home with myself.
On this anniversary of her death,
I'd like to pay my respects...
Love is just like a faucet
it turns off and on.
Love is just like a faucet
it turns off and on.
Sometimes when you think it is on, baby
it has turned off and gone...
Fine and Mellow

I heard the first cicada of summer a few days ago...
Summer in Japan is short and to the point-
The public pools don’t open till Marine Day
which happens to fall on the 19th July this year.
Schools continue classes till mid July-
But after that,
it is summer vacation time, baby.
I’ve been trying hard to ungimp
enough so I can follow through
with the plan of going to Guam
for vacation this year.
This will be my first visit.
I’ve already visited Saipan,
and that rocked....

Happy Fourth of July!
So many memories come to the fore on this day...
My childhood with family and friends,
picnics and summer fun.
I remember me and my three sisters
writing our names in the black velvet night sky
with sparklers...
I remember my last fourth of July in the US-
My son Michio
and I stood on the rooftop of our apartment building
in Cliffside Park, New Jersey.
The previous years of watching the Macy's
fireworks in NYC made me wise to the unbelievable crowds...
So, just across the river, from our rooftop we watching the
spectacular show on the Hudson River.
The boats like floating matchsticks on a glossy, silvery
waterway reflecting the magic in the skies:
Great booming and thundering blasts of light and color...
I asked my son this year if he remembered it,
and he does...
This year will be quite different than those
past celebrations-
Being an American abroad, one learns to adapt-
Taking your own culture with you, while assimilating
into the new countries' customs.
No, they don't have Fourth of July
fireworks in Japan-
But there are events,
if one is so inclined.
I remember a gig I had one year singing the
National Anthem and a few jazz numbers
in a hangar at the Yokota Air Force Base.
Hotter than Hell it was that day...
My 18 year old son now studies for his semester end exams-
Natsu (summer) fireworks will
be here next month.
I feel this year is the year to remember
past celebrations, and all the people I miss so much...
To all my family and dear friends, where-ever you are,
Have a Happy 4th July!
Till next time... 'Mela
